… I am drowning in work!
Which is a good thing, truly.
Forget looking for “real work”, I am currently on 3 very active projects, 1 that is winding down, and another that I have to knock over by Tuesday.
I work 4 days a week. That means 32 hours, right?
Monday, I drop the kids at preschool and school. So I can get to work by 9.30 (if I am lucky) and need to leave at 4.45 to pick them up again. That’s 6h45m.
Tuesday, there’s Assembly at school. Lots of important announcements, next week Biggie will play her recorder. Terribly time-critical stuff. So I try to go to that if I can (if I can work at home that day, usually). Let’s assume I work from home – I can do 9.45 – 3.15 before I have to pick Biggie up. That’s 5 hours (I’m leaving half an hour for lunch which, I discovered on Monday, is plenty of time for a sandwich and a game of Notre Dame on BSW).
Wednesday, I drop the kids at school/preschool. Bliss – Fraser picks them up. So I can work 9.30 – 6pm, which gives me a full 8 hour day.
Thursday is not so great. I can do 9.30 – 2.30 but then leave to collect Biggie from school and go to the library. That’s 4h30m.
Based on my count, that gives me a shortfall of 7h45m – nearly a full working day. That has to be made up during the week – in the evenings, on Fridays (when Otto and I have our special time together) and on weekends.
I need to find better ways to manage that time. This week, I think I’ve done okay – doing around 2 hours’ work in the evening, with a focus on administrative & relatively mindless work (because I’m tired). Typing meeting notes, sending emails, drafting docs that I can review during the day when I have more time & energy.
I’m also considering Friday daycare. Which I really don’t want to do routinely, but it might make me more available when Otto is at home. I’ve promised her we’ll bake biscuits (cookies) tomorrow night, while Biggie is out, which will be fun.
Not sure where the 3 days to write the test plan by Tuesday is going to come from, though. Thank goodness we’re not away this weekend! I think I will take Friday daycare (if available – cross fingers) and work Fri night, then go to games on Saturday & relax, then send the girls out with F on Sunday.
The good news is that this is all paying work. And it’s interesting work, too – each project is in quite a different area of our business & for a different client. At least one has the very real prospect of further work after the end of the financial year (1 July starts a new FY in Australia, so lots of clients are desperate to get their money spent before then).
And of course there’s the website review & information architecture for school, too, which is probably 4-6 hours a week, and which I didn’t factor in here.
This post is mostly for me to go back to, when I start to wonder why I have no time.
Meanwhile, I pre-emptively rewarded myself yesterday by buying a pair of boots.
Me: [tries on boots, admires them]
Saleswoman: “They are yuck.”
Me: ??? [I think they are pretty nice.]
Saleswoman. “Yuck. They are yuck.”
Me: [Penny drops. ]
My yak feet and I need to go sleep now.
