Brummm brummm!

01 Sep

Game night last night. It looked for a while as though we were going to have an unprecedented ten people, but illness claimed three of them. Apart from the increased requirement for gaming snacks, this also meant that we had to consider our gaming options.

Ten people breaks easily into two or three groups, although rickety card tables are perhaps not the best things to use. I’ve had my eye on this table for our spare room, which doubles as an overflow gaming room, for a while. If game night continues to get bigger, I might have to get it.

We did have three games that would take ten, so I put them out – Formula De, 6 nimmt and Werewolf. Fraser vetoed WW (no surprises there) and was keen to get FD on the table – I caught him looking at tracks while I was cooking dinner 🙂

This was a first Formula De game for everyone except Fraser. With seven cars, the track was pretty busy, although we quickly separated into two groups. I liked to call them, “The people who knew how to drive” and “The people who didn’t” – although it’s possible that die rolls may have had something to do with it.

In the first group were Fraser, Diana, Vince and Jane. In the second, were me, Richard and Stuart. Diana looked locked for a win but a bad roll (11 on the die that rolls 11-20) and Fraser chewing through tyres and brakes on the final turn ended up costing her the game – she sat in the space before the winning post and watched him sail through. Meanwhile, the second group were two turns back, some of us still stuck in second gear and Stuart (after spinning out) in first.

Eventually, we all limped over the line. I finished with no tyre or brake damage, which I now understand to show that I wasn’t driving “properly”. Stuart – despite claiming to have been sponsored by the road safety campaigners – pretty much totally destroyed his car and still came in last. There was speculation that he and Fraser were playing the Demolition Derby variant.

Total game time was just under an hour – not bad for a first play.

Verdict: Lots of fun with a big group. I’m not sure it’s a game I’d choose to get out regularly, although I’m thinking it might be fun to play a different track today so I might just be proving myself wrong there. Having a second set of FD dice definitely helped to keep things moving.

The Norden gate leg table! I want one of those too, but the Brisbane IKEA hasn’t had them while I’ve been wanting one. They’re so nice!

I know! It looks so good, because the drawers can hold spare dice and paper and pencils and all those gaming things you might need, and the table opens up to hold spare gamers 🙂
