Work and weekends

23 Apr

One of the frustrations with the work I do is the vagueness of some of the requests we get – “Can you quote on doing some work for me? It won’t take much to finish it off!” – sometimes it feels like we end up spending half the allocated project time managing the fact that there wasn’t enough time allocated for the project. I always allow for a “suck it and see” factor, but even so – there have been a couple recently where the scope creep wasn’t so much creep as explosion in many directions at once.

Meanwhile, heard back from New Client – they were happy with the work I did (note to self: Must bill them!) and would like me to continue with another 4 or so assignments. Yay 🙂 The work is reasonably interesting, quite varied, and very specifically time-bound, but can be done at any time of the day or night.

That’s important this week:

Wednesday (tomorrow) – teachers’ strike. Girls home with me all morning ( :cough: BSW time :cough: ), then I have a meeting at work.

Thursday – working from home, will try to go out to pick something up for a friend and buy a gift for Otto to take to a party on Friday

Friday – public holiday *yay* – :cough: BSW time :cough: – Otto has to go to a party in the morning, and we are starting game night early.

So far – and I feel I ought to throw salt over my shoulder or something when I say this – there is nothing planned for the weekend. NOTHING. Other than our usual Saturday morning stuff, and maybe salsa class on Sunday night, the weekend is clear. That’s virtually unheard-of.

Just make sure you have their commitment on the 4 assignments before you bill them! 😉

And coincidence – there’s a teachers’ strike here tomorrow, too. We’re doing half a day each and looking after a friend’s girls too. I think I might have to raid the games cupboard….
