Ugh

01 Sep

There are days when I wonder whether this trip was a good idea … and days when I think it was probably a bad idea.

They’re usually the days when the kids didn’t get enough sleep.

Today  is the latter kind.

On top of the news that someone broke into our house over the weekend (probably nothing stolen, but we need to do some repairs and I’m not quite sure how, given that we’re on the wrong side of the world), Otto is having another of her monumental tantrums that involve screaming and shrieking at the top of her voice.

This one is because I pointed out that she had paint on her jeans and told her she had to wear her smock if she was going to do painting. She refused, so I confiscated her paints. Cue shrieks.

I would not be surprised if we were kicked out of this flat. That’s how much noise she tries to make.

Ugh.

Ah, yes, some of the joys of raising children.

Hang in there… just wait until she’s a teenager! Then, it’s more likely to be the silent treatment, rather than screaming, and that can be almost as frustrating (except to the neighbors).

OMG, my youngest is 2 and does that, so he will keep doing that?!?!

@Gerald – that’s true, we get that end of the spectrum from the Bigster. Although I have to say that she has really grown up in the last couple of months, and her behaviour has improved beyond measure.

@Mousey – you may be more competent as a parent than we have been. (sigh). We got used to giving in because we were trying to encourage Otto to speak, and somewhere along the line she broke. She wasn’t ever big on the tantrums when she was small, but learned the pre-teen screaming hissy fits from her sister. Now we get one most evenings.

It was silly to come away before we had fixed that behavioural problem – we knew that Otto was really too young to travel. But we couldn’t have left it any later for the Bigster, so we were kind of stuck.

Meh – I make it sound worse than it is. It was just that, coming off such a fabulous weekend, it was out-of-proportion upsetting.

Tell Otto if she misbehaves you’ll send her back to Melbourne on her own to fix the house.

My 13yo behaves astonishingly well. I put that down to me being a callous bastard. Either that or he’s really smart and he’s getting away with something I can’t detect.
